Top two level in Premier title race

Castlefields and Sir John Bayley are level on points ahead of their Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League showdown this week.

Table-topping Castlefields suffered a 9-5 defeat at the hands of their big rivals St Georges.

Matthew Rhodes was the star man for the hosts with a 21-7 card over Phil Clinton, while Castlefields’ best result came courtesy of a 21-13 from Rich Goddard over Dave King.

But Michael Beer’s stunning run of 17 straight league victories came to an end as he was beaten 21-13 by Ian Gaut. It was Beer’s first defeat since the opening night of the season.

Defending champions Sir John Bayley pulled level on points with a 9-5 success over Chester Road, although Castlefields have a game in hand which they will play tomorrow night at home to Bowring.

Gary Beff led the way to a healthy away haul for the Whitchurch side in toppling Kane Beaman 21-10. Chris Worthington, Chris Ward and Gary Cooper were all 21-11 winners for Bayley.

Newport consolidated third place with a 12-2 beating of Meole Brace.

Mark Selley was the home side’s best winner with a 21-6 over Andy Wiggington, Darren Wellings shining for Meole Brace with a 21-12 against Alan Davidson.

Bylet were beaten 11-3 at Wrockwardine Wood but the result enabled them to move two points further clear of bottom club Wem USC.

Ifton picked up four useful points in a 10-4 defeat at Bowring and Hanmer are now 10 points clear of Wem despite a 12-2 defeat at Burway, who had an excellent 21-2 win for Kiah Roberts as their standout result.
