The Shrewsbury bowls sensation won the £9,000 Big Smash competition at Dalton & Askam, near Barrow in Furness, by coming out on top of a 128-strong field.

Castlefields king Wraight was favourite to win the £2,000 first prize after his stunning title-packed start to the season – and duly delivered with a 17-5 victory over Matt Gillies in the 20-end final.

“He was dominant in the final – from only being 5-4 up to then lead 11-5 after scoring two on the power play end 10,” said a Big Smash spokesman.

“He then managed to prevent Matt scoring again and, after scoring one on another the power play end, it meant he had won the £2,000 first prize.”

It took Wraight 19 ends to dispose of semi-final rival Zac Walker after an 18-14 close call against Jimmy Derby in the last eight in an event billed as an ‘exciting and modern sporting event with music – crown green bowls at its best.”
