Redditch Box Cup medals for Wellington ABC
Young boxers from Telford have delivered a rush of medals after successfully competing in a national competition.
Wellington Boxing Academy has taken four medals – three gold and one silver – from the Redditch Box Cup.
The Haygate Road-based club had three boxers in finals over the weekend, with one having secured gold last weekend.
Akash Tuqir, aged 15, won 44kg gold in his class by defeating Danny O'Donnell from Hooks ABC by unanimous decision.
Idris Mohammed, 14, added another gold when he unanimously outscored B Smith from Briton Ferry ABC in the 46kg division.
And Bilal Nadeem, 13, took silver after losing a close majority decision to Connor Downs of Far Cotton ABC at 46kg.
Husan Hussain, 13, had taken gold last weekend, defeating J O'Hara of Hooks ABC by unanimous decision in the 36kg division.
All four were presented with their medals last night by former Russian amateur champion Anna Shchur, who is training at Wellington, and Len Woodhall.
Woodhall is the trainer and father of former world super middleweight champion Richie, who also won bronze at the 1988 Olympics as an amateur.
Delighted club coach Mo Fiaz said: "They have all done very well because they were fighting good lads.
"Once you get to a final you don't get any easy fights. They were all very close fights but luckily we got the nod in most of them."
Telford & Wrekin Boxing Academy's Kieran Solon, 13, also won gold in the 36kg division.
He had won through to last weekend's final with a unanimous decision victory against an opponent from Birmingham the previous weekend.
But his schedule opponent in the final, from Red Corner ABC in Coventry, was withdrawn on Thursday night, handing Solon victory by walkover.
Hussain and Mohammed have both been invited to take part in the Dublin Cup in Ireland a week on Saturday.
The cost of the trip will cost £1,000 overall though and Fiaz is appealing for sponsorship to help fund the visit. For further details call 07891 772 259.
