Cameron Robb falls short in Midlands title bid

Cameron Robb's hopes of winning a West Midlands title in the National Ambition Boxing Championships came to an abrupt end on his home show last night.

The Donnington ABC fighter was pulled out by the referee at the end of the second round with another session still left to run against Jake Mulpeter, from Small Heath ABC in Birmingham.

The latest county round took place at the Donnington Sports & Social Club with Robb in action at 50kg in Class A, for boxers born in 1997.

Robb, who only joined from the now-defunct Shrewsbury ABC this month, tried to engage the double jab as the talented Mulpeter ploughed forward in search of the big shots.

His loaded left hooks started to land in the second round and took their toll on Robb, who took further punishment as he tried to throw leather back.

The referee decided enough was enough in the corner, despite the fighter's protests, but trainer Tristan Davies believes the odds were stacked against Robb from the off.

Davies said: "This fight has come a bit too soon for Cameron, he's only been with us for a short time and there's been little time to work with him, so I wouldn't have really stuck him in.

"But the opportunity came along to box for a title and I understand that he had to have a go, he's a brave lad. I am sure he will learn from this and come back stronger in the future."
