Century for Shropshire's Ed Barnard with England
Shropshire's Ed Barnard led the recovery for England's under-19s with a superb century in the first clash of their two-Test series against South Africa at Newlands.
Barnard was dismissed today for 114 as England were bowled out for 313 on the second day.
England had been invited to bat in Cape Town yesterday and they endured a poor start, slipping to 14-3 inside the opening five overs.
Craig Kirsten had Dominic Sibley caught behind with his second delivery, while Lizaad Williams removed Jonny Tattersall and Harry Finch in quick succession.
But Kishen Velani and Callum Jackson then steadied the ship for England with scores of 49 and 43.
And after arriving at the crease with his side still in trouble at 89-5, Barnard shared 63 with Jackson, 60 with skipper Olly Stone and a 90-run stand for the eighth wicket with No.9 Miles Hammond, who made a useful 39.
England's centurion rode his luck at times, no more so than when wicketkeeper Clyde Fortuin dropped him on 88.
But the former Meole Brace School pupil resisted the South African attack for 209 deliveries before being bowled by Michael Fassen.
His latest exploits have capped a fine few days for Barnard, who last week signed his first professional contract with County Championship side Worcestershire.
The 17-year old, a student at Shrewsbury School, impressed in the New Road club's academy and was rewarded with a summer contract for two years.
"It's all been a bit of a blur but I have just taken it in my stride," he said last week.
"It helps that I already know the likes of Steve Leach from playing with him at Shrewsbury."
Barnard has been regular in Shrewsbury's Birmingham League side, and said: "England are building towards the under-19 World Cup in February next year so are looking to give some younger players a chance."
