Wellington duo send run records tumbling
It was records and not wickets that went tumbling as Wellington batsmen Ben Gould and Alex Taylor ran riot at the weekend.
The duo combined to set a Shropshire League record opening stand of 388, in a third-team Division Two clash with Shifnal.
Gould was the chief destroyer as he smacked 223 off just 103 balls, including 27 fours and 11 sixes.
Taylor was unbeaten on 159 from 104 balls, with 19 fours and three sixes, when Wellington called a halt to the carnage with the score on 419-1 from 37 overs.
The stand was also a club-record first-wicket partnership for Wellington.
Not surprisingly, a shell-shocked Shifnal fell for 135 in reply with Taylor capping a stunning all-round performance by bagging 5-17.
Wellington's score failed to set a new league record though, due to their declaration.
Allscott struck 453-7 off 50 overs in 2010 in the old Shropshire Premier League, while Wem rattled up 450-3 off 50 overs against Albrighton earlier this season.
The runs were also flowing on Sunday in the Reserve Division Three clash between Oswestry fourths and Broseley seconds.
Broseley posted 345-3 declared in 37 overs, with centuries from Luke Richards and Les Pritchard.
But even that total failed to bring them success, as Oswestry eased to 346-3 in 37.1 overs with Alex Ramsey scoring 109 and Adam Woodcock 72.
