And the 138-run victory for the Shropshire League Premier Division side was made even sweeter,

After rivals Reman Services suffered a surprise loss to Ludlow & South Shropshire, Worfield are 25 points clear with just three games left and close to clinching their place in the Birmingham & District League.

Captain Nick Hudson said: "To win by the margin that we did and with the result at Reman, it turned out being a fantastic weekend for us.

"We batted very well in the middle order. The outfield was slow, so getting 212 off 49 overs was a really good effort and then to bowl them out as cheaply as we did.

"We dropped a few chances too. It was a roasting as it was, but it could have been even more emphatic."

Opener Tom Matthews (56) got Worfield off to a fine start, as Newtown won the toss and elected to bowl.

Dan Plank (38 not out), Tom Pickerill (37), Oliver Plank (32) and Gareth Lanchbury (25) also produced as the visitors posted 212-6.

Then Gagandeep Singh claimed 4-20 as they dismissed relegation-threatened Newtown for just 74.

The curtain may have come down on Reman's championship hopes.

The second-placed side were 35-6 at one stage before Jamie Wear (44) and David Laird (38) steadied the ship with a 59-run sixth-wicket partnership.

Matthew Morris (43 not out), Alex Johnson (28) and Dominic Bradburne (26) chipped in as they finished on 215-9.

But Bryn Simmons' 92 not out got Ludlow home by two wickets with just one ball left, despite Bradburne's 6-66.

Elsewhere, Frankton heaped further misery on relegation favourites Allscott with a winning draw and Gareth Dryer (57) top-scored for Wem in a 94-run win against Albrighton.

Albrighton looked good after a 79-run opening stand only to lose all 10 wickets for another 52 runs.

Bomere Heath and Cound had winning draws against St Georges and Wroxeter Grove respectively.
