Shrewsbury looking champion in title clash

Shrewsbury got their Birmingham League campaign off to a flying start after beating champions West Bromwich Dartmouth by 22 runs in a clash of two heavyweights.

Ed Barnard (43) top scored in a Shrewsbury total of 230 with Aqsad Ali taking 3-32 for Dartmouth, who were dismissed for 208, despite 55 from Basit Zaman.

Barnard (3-52) and Sam Griffiths (3-33) were the pick of the bowlers for Shrewsbury in the Premier Division affair.

Wellington made an excellent start in Division One by beating Himley by 82 runs.

Neil Edwards (65), Wendell Wagner (58) and Jamie Miller (47) took the Orleton Park side to 253-8.

Jamie Turner took 4-63 for Himley who were given a good start by Worcestershire's Tom Kohler-Cadmore (61), before their innings fell away as Miller stepped up to take 4-22 to help dismiss Himley for 171.

Oswestry suffered a four-wicket defeat to Walsall. Joe Clarke hit 138 for Oswestry as they piled up 275, but a second-wicket stand of 151 between James Middleton (117) and Tim Maxfield (85) eased Walsall to victory.

Newly-promoted Bridgnorth gained a valuable seven-run win against neighbours Shifnal in Division Two.

Karl Quiney top scored with 31 but it was his brother Dale who tamed Shifnal with 4-26 as the home side were dismissed for 151.

Jonty Mountford took 3-24 in Bridgnorth's innings of 158, while debutant Bryn Simmons was Shifnal's best batsman with 33.

In Division Three, Whitchurch were on the end of a 202-run defeat to Astwood Bank.

In a match reduced to 45 overs per side, Astwood Bank racked up 311-5 with Steve Adshead hitting 104.

Dan Thomas picked up 5-27 as Whitchurch slid to 109 all out, their only highlight being Ed Watson-Jones's 41.

Worfield's first game in the Birmingham League ended in a five-wicket defeat against Aston Manor.

Luke Sharples was Worfield's top scorer with 31, as they were dismissed for 128.

Gagandeep Singh then took 4-33 for Worfield, but couldn't prevent Aston Manor claiming the win.

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury's interest in the National Club Championship was ended at the first hurdle on Sunday.

A day after opening their Birmingham League campaign with victory over reigning Premier Division champions West Bromwich Dartmouth, Shrewsbury tasted defeat in the 45-over competition to Division One outfit Walsall.

Walsall opted to bat first after winning the toss and piled up a challenging total of 254-6 .

Skipper David Powles led the way with an unbeaten 89 while opener James Middleton chipped in with 46.

In reply, Shrewsbury were dismissed for 182 in the 41st over. Opener Will Parton top-scored with 44 while Alex Blofield contributed 39.
