Reman keep up the pace in the Premier

Reman Services kept up the heat on Shropshire League Premier Division leaders Frankton – and they couldn't have won the day in tighter fashion.

The Shrewsbury side beat Ludlow & South Shropshire by one run on the last ball of the game and it's a case of 'as you were,' with the top five sides all earning the full 24 points.

Batting first after winning the toss, Reman were 227 all out in 49.5 overs.

Malcolm Serplet (52) and Alex Johnson (51) starred with the bat, while Richard Taylor claimed 4-68 from 14 overs.

Will Sparrow (71) and number nine batsman Tom Gloster (54) inspired a recovery from 90-7 to lead Ludlow to the brink of a tie on 226.

But Reman had other ideas and right-arm seamer Serplet claimed the final wicket in the last ball, when Niall Salisbury made an excellent catch at mid-off to dismiss Gloster.

Captain Ed Ashlin was delighted with the win – especially as it avenged a similar episode against the same opponents last season.

He said: "It was nail-biting at the end and I was pleased to come away with the win.

"It was a decent catch and a big moment but we've been involved in a few close games, including one against Ludlow last year. They came out on top that time so it was good to get back one on them.

"We had them 90-odd for seven at one stage but they produced a great partnership between Will Sparrow and Tom Gloster so, credit to them, they played really well.

"Mal is a quality player with the bat but he hadn't bowled for six weeks because of a shoulder injury.

"But I can trust him with the ball because he performs very well in tight situations.

"We didn't bat as well as we'd have liked because I think 250 would have been a good score on that wicket and we had a wobble in the middle and lost a few wickets.

"Bowling-wise we had a few injuries so it was a case of everyone contributing, but we managed to chip away at their wickets early and held our nerve."

Things went via the form book for Frankton – but their five-wicket victory over basement side Bomere Heath was tighter than they would have liked.

Bomere won the toss and decided to bat but mustered a modest 119 before they were dismissed in 30.3 overs, Ken Gillespie top scoring with 21.

Recalled quickie Harry Stow and fast-medium bowler Jacob Northwood were the pick of the Frankton attack, taking 4-29 off 7.3 overs and 3-12 off six respectively.

Jordan Parry's 62 for Frankton included 14 boundaries as he and captain Ian Whitticase put on 70-plus for the third wicket and they took just 20.5 overs to reach their total.

Whitticase was full of praise for his attack, saying: "It was a very good performance from Harry.

"He took two key wickets in Ian Gillespie and the other opener Charles Wigley, both lbw, and then finished the tail off.

"And Jacob bowled really well - he made a difference when he came on for the first change."

It was the Tyler Trenoweth show as St Georges remained third on the same points as Reman after beating Madeley by 166 runs in the Telford derby.

The South African left-hand batsman hit 72, as Ben Byram's side piled up 294-9 and Jamie Griffiths scored 51 not out.

Trenoweth then put Madeley to the sword as his 5-41 helped dismiss them for 128 in the 38th over.

High-scoring Wem beat Cound by 98 runs. Will Savage scored 83 and Martyn Davies 62 as Wem reached 276-7, while Andy Harrison took 3-85. Richard Marlee and Danny Cohen took three wickets each as Cound were bowled out for 178 in the 42nd over.

Rajat Bhatia was the star for Newport as they beat Wroxeter Grove by 162 runs.

The Indian first-class batsman hit 130, as Newport piled up 293-3 off 48 overs in their comprehensive victory.

Assisted by Joe Watson (69) and Mark Downes (63 no), Bhatia's 107-ball innings contained six fours and three sixes.

Quatt (218-8) enjoyed a winning draw against Broseley (157-8).

Craig Jones top scored for Quatt with 75, assisted by Craig Harris's 38, while Gavin Jones took 4-39. Broseley replied with 157-8 with Gavin Jones hitting 58.
