The 41-year-old has spent the past four seasons with the Audley Avenue outfit and replaces Nick Watkins.

He led them to the Shropshire League title last summer but opted not to stand for re-election.

Downes said: "It's a privilege to be appointed captain. Next season presents an exciting challenge.

"I look forward to working closely with the players to form a competitive culture across all the teams at the club. The work starts now as we begin our preparations."

Ed Parton will be vice-captain, while Paul Aston and Craig Davies were reappointed as second-team captain and vice-captain respectively.

Melvin Williams and Lee Jakeman continue to head up the third side, who themselves captured the Division 4A title last term.

Ahead of their return to the Birmingham League, Newport have also secured the services of former Bomere Heath skipper and opener Ian Gillespie.

Joe Watson - who played for the club during the first part of last season - has also expressed an interest in returning.

The club kick-off their pre-season training with indoor nets sessions every Tuesday at Lilleshall Sports Centre, beginning February 9.
