Newport re-sign IPL star Rajat Bhatia
Newport Cricket Club have pulled off a major coup by re-signing former Indian Premier League star Rajat Bhatia.
Bhatia had an amazing season with the club in 2015 to help them win the Shropshire League Premier Division.
He scored 1,131 runs from just 15 innings at an average of 113, with a highest score of 196 not out, and also took 48 wickets.
The 36-year-old will be Newport's overseas player in 2016, as they return to the Birmingham & District League in Division Three.
Bhatia has played for Delhi, Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Tamil Nadu.
He said: "Newport is my second home and I'm really looking forward to returning this season.
"I had a great time in 2015 and I am always made to feel so welcome by all the members and supporters.
"I can't wait to get started and help Newport to further success in the Birmingham league this season."
The signing of Bhatia comes after the club also secured the services of former Bomere Heath captain and opening batsman Ian Gillespie.
Talented left-hand batsman and seam bowler Joe Watson, who played for the first half of the 2015 campaign, also returns along with Craig Atherton, who missed last season through work commitments.
Captain Mark Downes said: "The re-signing of Rajat is fantastic news for the club.
"His experience and quality will be vital for Newport as we look to compete in Division Three.#
"He had a great season for us last year, helping us get promoted, and is keen to come back for the 2016 season.
"With the additions of Ian, Joe and Craig, this gives us further added quality to our squad as we look forward to the challenge ahead."
Newport's pre-season training gets under way with indoor nets at Lilleshall Sports Centre on Tuesday evenings from February 16 between 8.30-9.30pm.
