David Wainwright stars again for Shropshire

David Wainwright helped put Shropshire in a promising position heading into the final day of their Minor Counties Championship clash at Cheshire.

Wainwright claimed five wickets and was unbeaten on 31 – to add to his 95 first time around – as the Western Division title hopefuls built up a lead of 228.

Cheshire started day two on 43-1 and initially made good progress, with Rick Moore and night watchman Jack Williams frustrating the visiting attack.

The pair took the hosts past three figures before their partnership of 65 was ended when Williams presented a catch to Richard Oliver off the bowling of Henry Blofield.

That breakthrough opened the floodgates and Shropshire were soon celebrating again when Wainwright got in on the act, having Moore caught behind by Harry Chandler for 66.

That brought 16-year-old debutant Henry Dobson to the crease, but he lasted just 22 balls before the Blofield-Oliver combination struck again.

It sent the teenager heading back to the pavillion having scored seven. The hosts had collapsed from 107-1 to 121-4, but Dave Hurst and Ryan Brown helped stem the tide.

The pair moved the score on to 152 before Hurst became Wainwright's third victim when he was trapped in front for 22.

Cheshire skipper Lee Dixon, who survived an early stumping chance, went on the attack in a bid to swing the game his side's way.

His 43 came off 30 balls before he was caught by James Ralph off Wainwright for 43.

Dixon had helped his side to 208-6 but another collapse would allow Shropshire to secure a first-innings advantage of 96.

Alex Wyatt was the man who polished off the tail, first removing Will Owen for one.

Four balls later, Wyatt had the big wicket of Brown who gave first slip Oliver his fourth catch of the innings after a stubborn 30 off 58 balls.

Adam Worrall made 17, before Wainwright completed his five-for and Ash Davis was last man out with the hosts dismissed for 234.

Shropshire looked to build on their lead and, for one of the few times this summer, enjoyed a good opening partnership.

Oliver and skipper Steve Leach put on 53, before the former was bowled by Williams for 27.

Scott Elstone struck 114 first time around, but was dismissed on 18 attempting a reverse sweep off Woods.

Ralph, in his 100th championship appearance for the county, was run out cheaply and Russ Aucott lasted just three balls before he was stumped for a duck.

Shropshire had lost three wickets in 27 balls but, with Leach looking solid and Wainwright in great touch, they were able to progress to 132-4 before rain brought an early end to proceedings.
