The 57-year-old, who played for Leicestershire from 1979 to 1990, held a talk at Shipton Hall in Much Wenlock.

Agnew – fondly known as Aggers – has become one of the voices of cricket following his work on the iconic BBC show Test Match Special.

And he entertained a crowd of more than 240 people in Much Wenlock as he told stories about his career – with proceeds going to the Church of St James, in Shipton.

Among the anecdotes was the time he suggested Ian Botham had failed to “get his leg over” – a statement that was voted the greatest sporting commentary ever in a poll.

“It was lovely to be back in Shropshire because it’s a county I know pretty well,” Agnew said. “My mother’s family are from Worthen so we used to spend a lot of time here on holiday.

“My grandmother died a long time ago but my aunt still lives in that part of the world and still farms.

“It was great to come back, talk to a lovely crowd about cricket and see the Shropshire countryside again because it’s beautiful.

“We raised some money for local causes and had a lot of fun.”
