James Taylor honoured with heralding start of England Test series
Former Shrewsbury School pupil and England international James Taylor was given the honour of heralding the start of the four match Test series against South Africa.
The 27-year-old, who retired from the game ahead of the 2016 season due to a serious heart condition, was chosen to ring the bell before the start of play on day one of the opening Test at Lord's.
He has a special connection with opponents South Africa, with six of his seven Test matches for England coming against the Proteas.
Taylor played an important role in England’s 2-1 series victory over South Africa on their own turf in 2015/16, helping his side win the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy.
Taylor, who also used to play in the Birmingham League with Shrewsbury, tweeted: "It was a great honour to ring the bell at the home of cricket! #specialmoment"
