Disastrous first day for Shropshire
Second-placed Shropshire are already facing the prospect of a follow-on after a disastrous opening day of their Unicorns Championship Western Division clash with Cornwall.
South African Greg Smith smashed five sixes on his way to an unbeaten 127 after hosts Cornwall won the toss at St Austen and elected to bat.
Coupled with fifties from opening batsman Scott Harvey (54) and captain Matt Robins (76), Cornwall posted an imposing 349-5 off their 90 overs, with a 190-run partnership between Smith and Robins doing the most damage.
Ross Aucott took two for 31 runs off nine overs and the rest of the wickets were shared around.
Shropshire’s reply stuttered from the off as Tom Dinnis ripped through the top order to leave the visitors staring down the barrel on 30-4.
Omar Ali, younger brother of England’s Moeen Ali, was the first to fall to Dinnis, who also trapped Shropshire captain Steve Leach and Charlie Home lbw as well as claiming the wicket of Will Parton.
Joe Carrasco and Ryan Lockley offered some resistance until Smith capped off his tremendous day with Lockley’s wicket before Aucott also fell.
Shropshire finished on 66-6 and are 283 runs behind mid-table Cornwall, and look set to follow on.
