Joe Clarke's England aim as tribute to former mentor
Worcestershire batsman Joe Clarke hopes he can one day earn a full England cap in memory of one of his former mentors, writes Jonny Drury.
Clarke has paid tribute to his former mentor at Oswestry Cricket Club Mike Robinson, who passed away following a short illness last week. Robinson was a relative of Clarke’s father, and the England Lions batsman recalled his memories of the Oswestry cricketing stalwart.
He said: “To hear the news was devastating. Robbo is my dad’s cousin, so when I was looking for a cricket club to start junior cricket, he was the first man to be called.
“He has supported me from my under-11s debut for Oswestry to my current professional career and was always one of the first to text to congratulate me after a good game, or if I have been selected for a tour.
“He always gave me great confidence in my ability and always said since a young age I’d play for England, so hopefully I can do him justice and put on that shirt for him.”
