Perry was also a player at Cricket Meadow and had a huge role in the junior coaching, helping bring youngsters through into the senior teams.

Skipper Sam Whitney said: "Ray loved the game and he loved Bridgnorth Cricket Club – the academy is named after him.

"He never held back, he always told you what he thought. He would always tell me what team I should be picking!

"He hadn't been around the last couple of years with his health issues and it's a sad day for the club. He will be sadly missed."

Former Bridgnorth and Shropshire all-rounder Jono Whitney tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the news of Ray Perry’s passing. A constant figure in my years growing up at @BridgnorthCC.

"A key player in junior development at the club and just loved being at Cricket Meadow. RIP Raster."

Cam Wallis tweeted: "Really sad to hear the news about a true @BridgnorthCC legend. Ray helped me a lot during my junior years at the club, trying to drill into me all his knowledge about bowling and the game.

"He would always ask how I got on on a Saturday and how I could improve! Thank you Rast, RIP"

Steven Caine tweeted: "@BridgnorthCC lost a pillar yesterday with the sad passing of former chairman and life member Ray Perry.

"He was tireless in his efforts that sees the club in its high regard within cricket for many years. Many players got their chance through his hard work and coaching. RIP Rast."
