Dawley United are hoping as many former players and fans attend as possible to reminisce.

Formed in 1969 by a group of friends who attended Phoenix School, Dawley Juniors won the Wrekin Minor League Cup during their first year before changing their name to United and joining the adult leagues.

"We had to move up because three of us turned 18 and were too old for the league," revealed former left-back John Poole, who is helping to organise the gathering this weekend.

"It meant we moved into the Wellington League at the time to get a kicking off the older teams – and boy, did we get plenty of those at the time."

United progressed to playing several seasons at the top of the Shropshire County League before the club disbanded in the mid-1980s.

"Over the course of the years the club must have had more than 100 players and we want to get as many people to the reunion as possible," added Poole.

"The idea came about last year when we attended the funeral of one of our old team-mates.

"You realise you can't just keep meeting up at funerals and we want this to become an annual event."

The reunion takes place at the Elephant and Castle in Dawley. For more information contact John Poole on 07855 869443.
