Two stoppage-time goals deny Ellesmere Rangers a fifth trophy of season
Ellesmere Rangers saw the chance of a fifth trophy this season slip away in dramatic circumstances as two goals in stoppage time won it for Wednesfield.
It was the second final of the season for the first team, after beating AFC Bridgnorth in the Shropshire Premier Cup final.
A number of those players also figured in the Shropshire Minor League Cup, Midland Floodlit Youth League Cup and Umbro Cup winning sides.
And Saturday's West Midlands League Premier Division Cup final, which was staged at Willenhall Town, appeared to be going the same way as the clock ticked into 90 minutes.
There had been a seven minute delay after Ellesmere took the lead for a second time on 83, which sparked a mass melee as both sets of players had to be separated.
The Meresiders led at half-time through Josh Parker's strike from the edge of the box, but Wednesfield battled back to claim an equaliser with 20 minutes to go.
Marco Adaggio's goal, seizing on the rebound with the goalkeeper having saved his shot after Ellesmere burst on the break, incited ugly scenes.
Play eventually resumed and Wednesfield's smash-and-grab in time added on saw them take the trophy, leaving the stunned Shropshire side wondering how they lost.
Manager Dan Stevens said: "It was just one of those things you couldn't control, it's not the nicest way to end the season but, hopefully, the lads will learn from it.
"Had there not been that break in play, when all sorts was going on, I don't think we would have lost the game. I have no argument with the amount of stoppage time, but it knocked us out of our stride.
"They were a real threat from set-pieces and very physical.
"We have had a lot of success lately and when they reflect, they will realise how well they have done this season."
