Haughmond to face tough Romulus test
Dan Williams wants his Haughmond side to continue to be as competitive as they have in recent matches.
After successive postponements, the Mond hope to return to action by facing Romulus, currently third in the Midland League Premier Division, at the Shrewsbury Sports Village tomorrow.
They were beaten 3-1 by this weekend’s opponents in Birmingham last month when they conceded two late goals.
Romulus are three points behind leaders Coventry United and have two games in hand on the table-toppers, while Haughmond remain fourth-bottom.
“We’re competitive basically, which is pleasing,” said boss Williams. “Lately, you can go to the last half hour of games and we’re always in it, so that’s what we want.
“All we can say in the team talk is let’s try and take the game deep because these good sides, if you give them a 1-0 or 2-0 lead, we’re not going to get back in the game.
“But if we can take it step by step, 15 minutes at a time or whatever, get to half time, they may get a little bit edgy, and the game opens up.
“You look at the last four or five games, we’ve won them by the odd goal or we’ve only lost by the odd goal, so we’ve been competitive to the last minute, which is what we’ve got to try and do really, not give soft goals away.”
Captain Jack Griffiths is unavailable this weekend and Louis Irvine is ruled out through suspension.
As for the challenge expected to be posed by Romulus, Williams added: “Obviously, they’re flying high. We should have got something there. We led for the majority of the game, conceded two late goals.
“They’ve signed a lot of people since then. They seem to be signing people regularly, so it could be a different team.”
