Leander Dendoncker: Wolves are on their way back

Wolves utility man Leander Dendoncker believes they are ‘evolving’ and gradually getting back to the high standards they have set in the past.

It has been a difficult season for Wolves in the Premier League following the sale of key players Diogo Jota and Matt Doherty last summer, while they have also lost star striker Raul Jimenez and several others to injury.

But having picked up four points from the last two games, Dendoncker – in defence against Leicester because of Willy Boly’s absence – feels they are now well-placed for a better end to the campaign.

“When players leave it’s not easy to replace them because they are used to playing in the way we play,” he said.

“When new players come it always takes some time to adapt. It’s always difficult.

“We have had some injuries – and we have (Daniel) Podence and Boly injured now – but we have Jonny (Castro Otto) back which is a huge one for us because he’s so important to the style we play.

“We are evolving, we are coming back to where we want to be – step by step.

“The season is long and we have to keep going this way, work hard in training, and everything will be OK.”

Beating Arsenal 2-1 and drawing 0-0 with the Foxes, Wolves have momentum behind them going into Thursday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash with Southampton.

“It’s been against two really good teams, we know the schedule we have is a tight one,” said Dendoncker.

“Four points out of six against these two teams is something positive. We have to keep in mind the game we played on Sunday, we created some good chances, and we have to make sure it goes in and we are just a little bit sharper in front of goal.”

Dendoncker added on the Leicester draw: “I think we played a good game, we had some chances and had the best ones to win the game. It wouldn’t have been stolen if we won it.

“It’s a clean sheet which is important for the defence and for their confidence. There are always things to improve on, but overall we can be satisfied.”
