Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry looking for youth cup glory after Burton battering
Teenage prospect Louie Barry is aiming for FA Youth Cup glory after helping fire Villa into the quarter-finals.
Barry bagged a hat-trick as Villa’s youngsters thumped Burton Albion 9-0 on Wednesday to set up a last eight tie away to Newcastle later this month.
The 17-year-old, who shot to fame in January when he scored his first senior goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup third round, believes Villa now have a good chance of winning the youth competition for the first time since 2002.
Carney Chukwuemeka (2), Aaron Ramsey, Brad Young and Seb Revan were also on target as they brushed aside Burton.
Villa, who were big favourites going into the tie, scored three times in the first 11 minutes.
Barry said: “It was a very good result for the team. We killed the game off very early which is what we wanted to do. Take the sting out of it.
“We were quite nervous going in so it was good to get those goals early. Ending up with a hat-trick really was the cherry on the cake.
“The front five, we were very good together. We were clinical. The centre-backs were good too, mopping the ball up.
“We are all good friends. A number of us play week-in, week-out with the under-23s so we know each others games. I think we are getting a really good bond at the moment.
“It bodes well for the next few games in the cup. I think we have a very good chance.”
Barry, who began his career in Albion’s academy and had a brief stint at Barcelona before joining Villa, completed his treble with a 25-yard free-kick 10 minutes from full-time.
He added: “That was my favourite goal. It is about two years since I have scored a free-kick. I practice them all the time after training.”
Villa’s lead under-18s coach Sean Verity praised the performance of his team, adding: “You’ve got to be happy when you see performances like that from kids who you’ve seen play for a few years.
“Most have come through the academy and then we’ve got ones we’ve added as well. It was nice that they turned up with the right mentality to do that and be 3-0 up after ten minutes.”
