A minute's silence was observed by players and fans of two Shropshire soccer clubs over the weekend following the death of Trevor Storton, who played for them both.
A minute's silence was observed by players and fans of two Shropshire soccer clubs over the weekend following the death of Trevor Storton, who played for them both.
Mr Storton, 61, died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. The Yorkshireman was player-manager of Oswestry Town in the mid 1980s and the silence was observed before The New Saints - as the club is known now - took on Neath in a Welsh Premier game on Friday night.
Ian Williams, chief operating officer and secretary of The New Saints, said: "Trevor played and managed The New Saints during our Oswestry Town days in the mid-1980s and will be remembered by many of our supporters in the town. The club sends it's condolences to Trevor's family and close friends at this sad time."
Central defender Storton is also fondly remembered in Telford as a member of the club's 1989 FA Trophy-winning side, which beat Macclesfield 1-0 at Wembley. Players had a minute's silence at The New Bucks Head on Saturday before AFC Telford took on Stalybridge.
A spokesman for AFC Telford United said: "Trevor Storton, who was the brother of Telford's legendary manager Stan Storton, made 97 appearances for the club in the late 1980s including in the 1989 FA Trophy Final. The club sends its deepest condolences to Trevor's family."
