Defender Ryan Valentine reckons AFC Telford United will benefit from trimming the playing squad this summer.

More than 50 players were used over the course of last season's campaign and a lack of consistency in personnel led to some disjointed performances.

Boss Andy Sinton is set to put together a leaner squad for next season and Valentine is confident that will benefit the Bucks.

"Financially, we are not one of the big hitters in the division," he said. "That means the club cannot afford a big turnover in wages and players.

"We had a lot of players pass through the club last year, and there were a lot of people hanging round the place who weren't playing.

"Next season we will have reduced numbers and a tighter-knit squad so that will help the spirit.

"There will be a better sense of continuity I'm sure and that will help us be more consistent with our performances on the field."

Valentine agreed to extend his stay at the New Bucks Head for another year at the end of last week and he is looking forward to another season at the club.

The Welshman will turn 30 before the start of the new campaign, but insists he still strives to improve.

"I want to carry on here," said Valentine. "The club has great facilities and the fans flock to the New Bucks Head every week.

"I am getting older now, but I will still be working to improve my game."
