AFC Telford to release Darren Byfield
AFC Telford United will not be renewing striker Darren Byfield's contract when it expires at the end of the month.
The Bucks signed up Byfield on a six-month deal in September to help provide cover for injured forwards Chris Sharp, who had a hernia problem, and Jake Reid, who had a hamstring injury.
But the former Aston Villa and Walsall forward has seen his appearances limited to six games, including one goal, in that time due to a hamstring injury.
Byfield underwent intensive rehabilitation work at Lilleshall to help remedy the problem in early November.
Boss Andy Sinton, who is aiming to freshen up his squad in January, revealed Byfield is fit again now but the club had taken the decision not to renew his contract when it expires next month.
But the manager praised the contribution the 36-year old had made and added he had been a 'really good professional.'
He said: "We spoke to Darren the other day. We won't renew his contract. He came to us when we had a real tricky situation with injuries.
"He has played a few games, he has been terrific, a really good professional. He is fit now but his contract finishes in January.
"We just made a decision as a club and I think Darren realised he isn't going to be a first choice striker. He will move on to pastures new and we wish him all the best."
Sinton added that Byfield will remain part of the set-up at the New Bucks Head until the New Year.
Byfield's only goal for the Bucks came on October 6 when he slotted home a seventh minute penalty in the home game against Woking to earn Telford all three points.
The veteran was also involved in further league games against Cambridge United, Mansfield, Newport County, Gateshead and most recently Kidderminster Harriers.
Byfield, who had spent pre-season on trial with Port Vale, made his professional debut for Aston Villa back in 1997 and has represented Jamaica at international level
