Blog: AFC Telford should go back to their roots

Three managers in eight years - then four in the space of three months for AFC Telford, writes blogger Rob Hughes.

Stability is now massively important. Hopefully, those currently in charge in John Psaras and Alex Meechan can instil that within the club.

Their idealologies are representative of the AFC Telford United model and we saw an instant improvement in Wednesday nights' game.

OK, we still didn't manage to get the victory, but we were more organised, harder to beat and shut the opposition out for the first time in a long time.

If we stop the opposition from scoring, we have a better chance of winning game. So here's hoping we are now on the right track.

A new broom sweeps clean and reflecting on what we have seen since October - five long, painful months ago - that really needed to happen.

The heart of our great club has been ripped out and the lifeless corpse was suffering such a beating.

Fingers of blame can be pointed all over the place, but what needed to happenwas those not in it for the club were shown the door.

That, in turn, contributed to an improved 'team' performance. As supporters, we now need to back those that guide and lead our club, those that will be here whoever the manager-managers might be, stand strong together.

Stand strong in numbers. After all, it's our monies that have biggest bearing on our future, our goals and our ambitions!

Chairman Lee Carter, the man at the helm, has a clear idea of what he is looking for in a new manager. Maybe not a specific name that he believes can take us forward, but a certain list of criteria.

Away from him, supporters - me included - have their ideas in mind for the sort of manager that should prowl the touchline at the New Bucks Head and guide us along the way for the next chapter in our tale.

Many people believe they can manage, many of whom are out of work, untried or untested, others have been out of the game for a while, some have recently been sacked, or parted company with their former employers.

Some are currently embroiled in relegation battles; others in promotion pushes. You have the ones that you have heard of – and the unsung heroes, quietly going about their jobs.

So many options, so many choices. Waiting until the end of the season really helps to widen our net as we strive to catch the right one, or ones to take us forwards.

The news from the recent fans forum that we had not scouted a lower league game in 15 months begs the question of exactly what had we been doing since the halfway stage of our first season back in the Premier?

Not being able to compete with sides financially in the Premier for Conference or Football League experienced players 'journeymen' surely the idea that was clear to everyone was to scour the lower leagues around us and bring these players with hunger and desire on.

Often this season, we have seen players struggling for fitness due to joining semi-pro, part-time Telford, from their full-time parent clubs.

Lower down the leagues, players somehow manage to play football, hold down day jobs and keep themselves incredibly fit.

They also have that hunger and fire in the belly that has been somewhat lacking from large chunks of our playing squad and sorry, but that's unforgivable.

I want someone who will see us as a challenge. Someone who wants to kick on and grow with the club, not drag us kicking and screaming to professionalism.

Making the most of our community core – arriving back at that much needed place where the club is at the heart of our community, filled with pride and passion.

The way to do that, is with a side that will run through brick walls for the fans and each other, players that will back each other up in any situation, guys that will scrap and bleed black and white, AFC Telford United blood.

Those players are out there and the right manager at the helm will unearth these gems and ensure our supporters are walking tall again.

They will spread the word that AFC Telford, are on the march again- together, United. I will finish, by echoing what I said previously, the final months of the season may not be pleasant.

Seeing our club battered and bruised, but let's not walk away and abandon it. Let's give them as much support as we can in the stands and on the terraces.

The more money we can bring in through the 12th man, the more money we can generate through the gate, the more money the future man in the hot-seat has to mastermind fantastic scenes come May 2014.

Come on Telford!
