AFC Telford's Alan Moogan ready to pitch in

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson is considering bringing player-coach Alan Moogan into a match-day squad for the first time in six months.

The midfielder is now fully fit after groin surgery, but has undertaken a watching brief on the sidelines for the past month as part of the back-room team.

However, the 29-year-old has come back into Watson's thoughts when considering the lush Rivacre Park surface at tomorrow's hosts Vauxhall Motors.

Moogan's ball-playing skills may suit the pitch and he's ready to be included, along with fellow midfielder Russell Benjamin and striker Tony Gray after illness.

Telford could extend their Skrill Conference North unbeaten run to six games but Watson expects a test, with the respect he has for opposite number Carl Macauley.

Watson said: "If you look at the two games we have just had, Stockport had just won seven on the bounce and Worcester five out of their last six, yet we still beat both.

"It's been a tough run and this won't be an easy game, either. It's a lovely pitch up there and Carl has done a brilliant job, as he loses a lot of players year-on-year.

"Every year he keeps them up, he's performing miracles, because you only have to look at the teams who are going down and they are paying out more on players.

"I am surprised and amazed he hasn't got a bigger job."

Watson and assistant Dominic Morley have known Macauley ever since the three were players at Witton Albion in the 1990s, where he went from strength to strength.

The 43-year-old has history in a Telford shirt, too, moving to Shropshire after Witton and also going onto success at Barrow and Burscough before becoming a boss.

He said: "Me and Dom played with Carl at Witton Albion, so there's a few connections between us. Carl was a bit like our Wes Baynes, a good and mobile full-back.

"Carl broke into the higher echelons of non-league football quite late, he came from West Cheshire football but he did great for Witton and then Barrow.

"He won the league at Barrow and then moved on to Telford, before captaining Burscough to an FA Trophy win. He actually had a very good career."
