AFC Telford's Alan Moogan in line for start

AFC Telford United could hand player-coach Alan Moogan his first start for seven months in Saturday's home clash with Oxford City.

The 29-year-old midfielder has been pushing for a full 90 minutes since making his return for the Bucks after a long absence following groin surgery.

Moogan has been back to fitness for a month and has made three substitute appearances, given two full second-half run outs in the last two.

He picked up a booking without even being on the pitch for Saturday's 3-2 win at home to Histon, after clashing with opposing manager Brian Page.

That precluded his introduction to play but he could be involved from the off this weekend, as the Skrill Conference North promotion race continues.

Much will depend on whether manager Liam Watson goes with three centre-backs, with Dan Preston recalled to partner Neill Byrne and captain Simon Grand.

If the Bucks boss sticks with 4-4-2, he has the option of bringing in Moogan or fellow midfielder Russell Benjamin, who is approaching fitness after illness.

Watson said: "I was desperate to bring Alan on, but he had already been booked and I couldn't take the risk of putting him on and then getting sent off.

"I need to get a game into him, he's been ready for a while and I think we need his leadership on the pitch, especially in a game like Saturday.

"We will see how Russell is this week, he wasn't well again at the weekend so he needs to get a full week's training under his belt now."

Defensive midfielder Mike Grogan joined striker Adam Farrell at the top of the club's scoring charts after a double against Histon on Saturday.

Watson said: "Mike has got a knack of getting onto things but, on the flip side to that, you can only turn round and say that the delivery must be good.

"I knew he had goals in him, but I wouldn't have said he would be where he is. He's adapted well, but his performance has got to improve from Saturday.

"We all need to and you always get work-rate from the lads, but our application must be better than that. We won't make an issue of it - unless it happens again.

"We just need to put a performance in now, starting against Oxford City on Saturday."
