Crucial AFC Telford win is soured by injuries

AFC Telford manager Liam Watson could be forced back into the transfer market after injuries soured last night's morale-boosting third league win of the season at home to Altrincham.

The Bucks' 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Sam Smith and Adam Farrell, came at a price.

Injuries to midfielder Mike Grogan (ankle) and Sean Clancy (shoulder) look set to force Watson to look for new recruits ahead of Saturday's trip to Conference Premier leaders Barnet.

And the Bucks chief says bringing in quality players is proving particularly difficult with the transfer window currently closed, while Telford's involvement in the FA Cup is also presenting a hurdle.

Regarding the win, he said: "I am delighted that we got the three points but I didn't think we played well.

"I thought for the first half an hour we did and then the game seemed to drift by us. We never held it up front.

"But we battled away and probably should have made it 2-0 a lot earlier. We had a couple of great chances for Tony Gray which never went in and then we were hanging on a bit."

He added that Grogan's injury did not seem as serious as Clancy's, but he would now probably need to bring in new signings.

He said: "Mike seemed to get a knock on his ankle. I don't think that is overly serious but I am concerned about Sean.

"It looks like he has popped his collar bone so we need a couple of players in. The board can't do any more because they are saying there is money available.

"But where it is difficult for me is that it is like trying to shop when the shops are shut, and we have got the FA Cup as well. Are clubs above you really going to loan you players and let them play in the FA Cup?"
