Johnny Gorman wings in to sign for AFC Telford

AFC Telford United are today set to pull off a coup with the signing of former Wolves winger and Northern Ireland international Johnny Gorman.

The 22-year-old left midfielder, who has nine full caps, has agreed to join the Bucks on a one-year deal after helping Barrow to the Conference North title last season and was due to sign today.

Gorman returns to the Midlands looking to resurrect a promising career that included a single Premier League appearance for Wolves after being named their academy player of the year in 2010-11.

"I just want to play games at whatever level – if it's Conference North or the Premier League, it's football. Playing football is all I want to do," said Manchester-based Gorman, whose internationals include an appearance against Italy side containing Andrea Pirlo in October 2011.

"I've been to places where I don't want to sit on the bench and, at 22, I just want to play week-in, week-out and be playing in a successful team.

"I just want to get to somewhere I can play and progress my career and move in the right direction again."

After playing for both Manchester City and Manchester United as a schoolboy, Sheffield-born Gorman was snapped up by Wolves from Old Trafford in 2009 and signed a two-year deal in March 2011.

But his senior debut – as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat at Norwich on March 24, 2012 – was to be his only first-team appearance for Wolves where he was kept out by Matt Jarvis.

The midfielder joined League Two side Plymouth on loan for five months in August 2012 and scored his first competitive goal in a 3-0 League Cup win on his debut against Portsmouth on August 14.

But he struggled to get regular action at Plymouth and returned to Wolves in September 2012.

Loan spells at non-league Macclesfield and Cambridge United followed, but he only made one and two appearances respectively.

Released by Wolves when his contract expired in June 2013, he signed a one-year deal at League One Leyton Orient but he was released at the end of the season after making just seven appearances in all competitions.

Last August, Gorman signed for non-league Southport, but he played only five times – including his only goal, in a 3-3 draw at Telford – before switching to Barrow in October and making 20 appearances.

Gorman's will be the fifth arrival in little over a week for boss Steve Kittrick, after Josh Brizell, Danny O'Callaghan, Jordan Goddard and Kyle Brownhill.
