New AFC Telford boss Rob Smith kicks off with two signings

New boss Rob Smith has kick-started his AFC Telford revolution with a double swoop for Darren Campion and Lucas Dawson.

Left-back Campion was Smith's captain for four years at Hednesford Town before leaving for Worcester City in the summer.

But the 27-year-old agreed to have his contract cancelled on Thursday and wasted no time in linking up with his former boss, who believes he will bring much-needed leadership to the Bucks dressing room.

"Darren is a Conference North player," said Smith. "He knows what it's all about, is a born leader and fits the bill for us.

"He went to Worcester at the end of last season and things didn't quite work out for him. I'm delighted to be working with him again."

Midfielder Dawson began his career at Stoke City and played in the Football League with Carlisle. The 21-year-old finished last season with Nuneaton Town.

Smith and assistant Larry Chambers got a first look at their squad when they watched training on Thursday night just hours after their return was announced.

The Bucks currently sit rock bottom of National League North and Smith thinks the Bank Holiday double bill, starting today at Gloucester City before Monday's home game with Brackley Town, offers the perfect chance to get to know his players.

"I had a chat with the lads before training, it is tough at the moment because I don't know most of their names," he said.

"There are a few who look a bit down and it is our job to try and bring a positive vibe around the place," he said. "We want to change the outlook and these two games over the Banks Holiday are ideal."

"The more you see the players the better. Once we have these two games out of the way we will have a much better idea of where we stand.

"There is not a lot we can do in the short-term other than try and give these lads a bit of confidence."
