John Cofie could use Telford as a platform

One-time Manchester United wonderkid John Cofie has been backed to get back into the Football League if he continues his bright start for AFC Telford United.

The 22-year-old striker made his debut as a substitute in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Gainsborough Trinity and looked sharp.

He was denied in a one-on-one and also set up Ryan Rowe for a chance. He's signed on a non-contract basis.

But manager Rob Smith – who is awaiting an answer from Halifax on extensions to the loans of Graham Hutchison and Richard Peniket – believes the youngster can fulfil his potential higher up.

Smith said: "I thought he was the one really exciting thing about the game. If he can take that on, we'll have an excellent player on our hands."

Ghana-born Cofie was bought by the Old Trafford giants for £1million when they snapped him up from Burnley as a 14-year-old.

Since then he has had spells at Barnsley and Old Gunnar Solskjaer's Molde, before cameos at Crawley and Wrexham.

Smith admits he is baffled that Cofie has ended up in National League North, saying: "He's had issues, but also a bit of bad luck.

"But he's got a fantastic attitude. If he does well for us and performs how he can, he can go back into the league again.

"He's quick, got good feet, and even though he's not the best in the air, he's got good spring and he's a goalscorer. He can be the all-round package.

Meanwhile, Telford have announced an offer to help combat 'Blue Monday', the third Monday of January which is supposedly the year's most depressing day.

The club is offering 'four for £44' – adult admission for the Bradford, Hednesford, Fylde and FC United of Manchester games for a combined £44 (less for concessions).

The offer is for advance purchases only, to this Friday (5pm).
