The Bucks were visitors to North Wales, where they faced a recently relegated Colwyn Bay and eased to a 2-1 victory.

Nine of Smith's 10 new signings - only James Hurst was missing with injury - saw some action.

First-half goals from Lee Fowler and Danny Reynolds were enough for United, and to be truthful they could have netted a hatful.

Hosts Bay responded midway through the second-half but never looked like forcing a leveller.

Dwayne Samuels had already been unfortunate not to break the deadlock in front of an anticipating visiting Telford faithful.

Last season's Player of the Year connected with debutant Sean Williams' deep corner and nodded just over the angle.

But it took just five minutes for another of the new starters - high profile summer capture Lee Fowler - marked his debut with a fine strike.

Industrious running from Dave Hibbert down the Telford left allowed the striker to cross for Tom Peers.

The recent signing from Chester then set the ball invitingly for the on-rushing Fowler who drilled a fine low half-volley into Shaun Pearson's corner.

Bay, who were playing in the Conference North two seasons ago before suffering successive relegations, had chances of their own as Louis Corrigan's free-kick forced James Montgomery into a save before Gareth Grant nodded over.

Midfielder Williams continues his tidy showing and following a give-and-go with Peers, struck a rising 25 yard strike that forced Pearson into a decent stop.

Hibbert and Jack Rea both went close to doubling the comfortable Bucks lead. With Telford's 4-3-3 system - and Williams, Fowler and Peers particularly - impressing.

Samuels again went close after profiting from a fortunate rebound but his finish was palmed over by Pearson.

Smith's men did eventually double their tally some eight minutes before the break.

After his corner was cleared, Williams sent in a second cross from the left and Danny Reynolds - signed from Wrexham during the close-season - flashed his near post header across Pearson and into the corner.

Things took a little slower to get going in the second period as Smith made a raft of changes - while Lucas Dawson had replaced a hobbling Rea late in the first-half.

Trialist Micah Evans and Zak Lilly were brought on in the wide positions, both flanking central forward man Josh Wilson.

Behind them, Callum Gittings and Michael Monaghan - two more summer signings - took their positions in the middle.

Ben Bailey, who spectacularly made an early return from his honeymoon to be in the match day squad, replaced first-half skipper Gianluca Havern, while Dan Preston took the armband.

The Bucks kept it beat and tidy while remain in control without forging many clear-cut openings. Trialist Evans, formerly of Blackburn Rovers and Chorley, showed flashes of his pace and trickery on the wing.

Far from being troubled, the Bucks then had their lead halved as they failed to deal with a left-sided cross and Danny Andrews swept a finish across Montgomery.

Telford rallied and were unlucky not to re-establish their two-goal lead as Evans again showed his pace but sub keeper Simon Williams saved his low shot.

From Dawson's corner, Wilson climbed to power a header in that was cleared off the line by Corrigan.

Straight down the other end, Dawson's interception was vital as the hosts looked to level midway through the half.

The impressive Monaghan twice went close with 20 minutes to go. First curling at Williams before some fleet-footed skill saw him dance beyond challenges only to draw a finish narrowly wide.
