Places are still up for grabs for AFC Telford

Rob Smith admits there are still up to eight places up for grabs in his AFC Telford United team for the big kick off.

The Bucks boss has transformed his squad with 10 summer signings and all, barring the injured James Hurst, have impressed in pre-season.

Smith admits he has plenty of options, claiming only keeper James Montgomery and full-backs Dwayne Samuels and Darren Campion have nailed down places for the National League North curtain-raiser at home to AFC Fylde a week tomorrow.

"Dwayne has been a star performer and barring injuries and suspensions, he and Darren Campion will be my full-backs," said Smith.

"But apart from those, everything else is up for grabs. I wouldn't like to say (what my best team is) at the moment because pretty much everything is up for grabs."

Smith has previously singled out striker Dave Hibbert as impressing him in the pre-season workouts, but he now admits all his players have caught the eye.

"Pretty much everyone has impressed. They have done themselves no harm in terms of selection," he said.

"It's a case of they're all really trying to stand out from the crowd to get a shirt for that first game of the season, and I think they're all on an even keel.

"Normally you get a few people lagging back in training but they're all at a very good fitness level. But some might need to up their game to stand out from the crowd."

Smith says he is more than happy with the size of his squad and has been pleased with the way pre-season preparations have gone.

"Anywhere near 17 or 18 is fine for me and everything has just about gone to plan," he added.

"We've done nothing too amazing, but then I didn't expect us to. The players have done everything that's been asked of them."

With only a Birmingham City Under-21s team to come tomorrow, Smith says his players are ready to step up the tempo.

"We're just about where we need to be.

"It's getting to the stage where we're getting close to real thing."
