Rob Smith likes look of Telford strike pairing

AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith is excited by the the developing understanding between Dave Hibbert and Tom Peers.

The pair both netted in the 2-0 win over Stalybridge Celtic at the New Bucks Head on Tuesday night, which was Bucks' first triumph of the National League North campaign.

Smith feels Hibbert, who has previously played for Port Vale, Preston North End and Shrewsbury Town in the Football League, will play a pivotal role for the Bucks against Curzon Ashton tomorrow.

The boss also believes having a targetman is essential in order to be successful in the division.

"I just think he's that physical outlet for us, he wins so much in the air, takes a lot of pressure off us," said Smith.

"Tom Denton at Halifax, Mark Beck at Darlington, similar sorts of players.

"We missed him on Saturday (against Tamworth)."

Ideal

As well as Hibbert, Smith has been impressed with Peers, who is the club's leading goalscorer so far after two goals in his last two league games – the 2-1 loss at Tamworth and the victory against Stalybridge.

Hibbert missed the first of those two due to the artificial surface at The Lamb Ground, which has less give than grass and is not considered ideal for the striker after a serious knee injury he sustained a few years ago.

Against Stalybridge though, the pair combined effectively – Peers with his relentless work ethic and Hibbert with his sheer strength and neat hold-up play.

Curzon Ashton conceded 10 goals in their first two games in the National League North this season and their Tameside Stadium is renowned for its high-quality surface.

Smith will hope his side can take full advantage of the well looked after pitch and continue to be clinical in front of goal.

When asked if Hibbert and Peers make for a traditional big man, little man partnership, the boss added: "Yeah it is.

"When you know a player is going to win you flicks like that it's ideal for a striker, he's got the experience as well.

"I think all (Hibbert) needs to do is chip in with more goals so I was really pleased he got one."

Bucks will check on the fitness of midfielder Jack Rea, who came off injured in the midweek win over Stalybridge.
