AFC Telford defender Paul McCone thanks father for injury comeback

AFC Telford United defender Paul McCone says it was dad Paul McCone Senior that lifted him from the dark days of his cruciate ligament damage.

The Bucks stopper was facing another year on the sidelines with the serious injury, picked up within a few months of his return from an ankle problem that also kept the former Stourbridge hero out for a significant period.

McCone admitted to still feeling 'a little bit of rust' after three lots of 90 minutes under his belt – in which Telford kept two clean sheets as their form improved.

But he reserved praise for his father after almost turning his back on the game.

"I was going to jack it in. I'd just brought my house, it was the last thing I needed," the former Wolves trainee said.

"But my old man summed it up best. He said get fit and be able to play and then see how you feel.

"You have to try and play while you still can because there'll come a time when you can't play any more. Then the further you get through there's light at the other end of the tunnel."
