Rob Smith: Things are taking shape at AFC Telford with coach
AFC Telford United chief Rob Smith believes Lilleshall training sessions under Gavin Cowan have played a key part in the team's turn of fortune.
Confidence and spirits are high at the New Bucks Head on the back of consecutive wins.
And Smith has praised the input of former Shrewsbury defender Cowan, who leads coaching sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Lilleshall.
Smith said a fresh set of eyes has provided a lift while the Telford boss and assistant Larry Chambers have been able to focus on opposition weaknesses and any potential transfer targets.
"The last four or five weeks at Lilleshall have been very good," said the boss.
"We've done a hell of a lot of work on shape and now I feel there's a real structure to our play. The personnel have taken to it well and we've looked good for a while.
"Gav's done very well. He brings fresh eyes and is a very good coach.
"It allows us to go and watch opposition games or possible targets.
"It's nice for us to be more on the outside.
"I hope Gav can be with us permanently. He came in and we were having a look at him and he is having a look at us. He's made a good impression and he seems to be enjoying it.
"We've got exactly what we want at the moment. Players able to fit into a system. We're getting nearer that squad of 17 and at the moment everyone is fit. We can be flexible and the shape can depend on opposition."
John-Paul Kissock has been involved in both of Telford's victories since arriving on-loan from Ebbsfleet.
And Smith is delighted with the midfielder's influence on the squad's other attackers. "We're really pleased. JP's been that link between the midfield and strikers that we've been missing," the boss added.
"You look at Josh (Wilson) now. Josh is a key player for us.
"With a fit Josh Wilson you're guaranteed goals.
"Even going back to pre-season he had injuries. Now it's coming together and over the last two or three weeks he's playing and has got goals.
"We look a different team with a fit and firing Josh in."
