Larry Chambers calling on AFC Telford to upset the odds
Assistant boss Larry Chambers has urged the AFC Telford United players to upset the odds at Stockport County tonight, adding: “These are the games you want to be playing in.”
They are likely to be playing in front of the biggest attendance to see a Bucks match this term as Edgeley Park usually welcomes more than 3,000 supporters.
Telford are 17th while Stockport are seventh, out of the play-off places on goal difference.
“If you are a player, these are the games you want to be playing in, irrelevant of where you are in the league,” said Chambers.
“There may be as many as 4,000 fans there and it’s a chance to show what you can do.
“Stockport are going for the play-offs and with the news about Darlington (not being able to compete in the play-offs due to their ground not meeting league requirements), they will be really looking to get the win. The onus is on them.”
Chambers has reiterated that players’ futures at Telford are on the line and added: “Some of the players still have a lot to play for and we are not mathematically safe yet either.
“It’s big for the players because firstly, they need to prove themselves and secondly, it’s a massive crowd to play in front of.
“As big as it is for Stockport, it’s just as big for us.
“And it would be nice to go up there and spoil the party.”
Telford go into the fixture on the back of a 3-0 loss at Boston United last weekend.
They won their two previous games before that – against Stalybridge Celtic and Worcester City – and Chambers said: “After two wins, to lose in the manner we did last weekend was very disappointing.
“Our away form has not been great all season and in fairness to Stockport, they have bee prettyn strong at home, but the players have a point to prove.”
Chambers also gave an update in terms of injuries and added: “Paul McCone (ankle) trained on Tuesday, he trained well.
“Zak Lilly (toe) is probably 50/50 and Jon Royle (groin) is doubtful.
“Dave Hibbert (quad) won’t be available but Jack Rea (toe) had the 20 minutes or so last weekend and trained on Tuesday so he should be OK.”
