AFC Telford boss Rob Smith urges Jack Rea to win starting spot
AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith has urged Jack Rea to cement a starting spot after the club's longest-serving player agreed new terms.
Rea, aged 25, first signed for the Bucks in January 2015 and is the 18th player to be unveiled for the upcoming National League North season.
He made 33 appearances last campaign and will be competing against Joe Fitzpatrick, Jon Royle and Kieran Dunbar for a starting spot in centre midfield.
Smith offered Rea a fresh deal several weeks ago, and the former skipper has now committed his future to Telford amid interest from other clubs.
"Jack is a good lad and he has probably been our most effective midfielder over the last couple of years," said the Bucks chief.
"He took his time (in agreeing fresh terms) but, in fairness, I think he was pretty well sought after.
"As I have said before though, just because a player has signed forms, it does not mean they are going to walk into the team.
"They have to really fight for a place and show why they deserve to be here as, at the moment, we are a bit top heavy and something will probably have to give."
Smith recently stated he wanted a squad of 18 for the new season.
He has that number now – made up of a goalkeeper, seven defenders, seven midfielders and three forwards – but is still on the lookout for players.
A striker or two is on the agenda, while several trialists are set to come in for pre-season training which starts tonight.
"Last season we weren't good enough. Everyone has a point to prove and has to up their game," said Smith.
"Most of the players we have now are on non-contracts so if changes need to be made then they can be.
"All the players have to come out and really prove themselves over pre-season."
Rea insists the club has been given a new lease of life this summer, and added: "I am delighted to be signing on again at Telford this season.
"The type of players recruited and the way the management team are planning for the season ahead has given the club a refreshing and exciting feel.
"I can't wait to meet up with the lads (tonight) and start the hard work leading up to the season.”
