There are plenty of positives at AFC Telford, says Jordan Gough
Jordan Gough believes AFC Telford United are ‘showing good signs’ ahead of the visit of title favourites Salford City.
Tomorrow’s game is the third of the National League North season for the Bucks after a 1-0 win at York City and a 3-1 loss to Brackley Town.
And while they may have lost at the New Bucks Head on Tuesday, Gough feels the new-look squad, under Rob Edwards, are in fair shape ahead of another home clash.
The left-sided centre-half, aged 27, said: “I would say that we have competed really well considering we are a new, young squad.
“There are plenty of positives there to see.
“We want to play football and create a winning mentality within our dressing room, and I think we are showing good signs going forward as a club.”
Gough is one of the many new arrivals at Telford over the summer.
Formerly of Solihull Moors, he won the division with them two seasons ago.
He has featured in a back three in the Bucks’ first two games, along with skipper Shane Sutton and on-loan Wolves youngster Aaron Hayden.
And Gough insists a lot of work is being done on the system on the training pitch.
“We have gone over us having to communicate and marshal each other and players around us, it is very important to be organised and disciplined as a squad,” he said.
“(Coach) Gavin Cowan and the gaffer have advised us a lot through training and on game days on things we can improve and what we have done well.
“We are going to continue building on that.”
Visitors Salford are as short as 9/4 with bookmakers for promotion this season.
They are owned by Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Gary and Phil Neville – and came to prominence with BBC’s Class of ‘92: Out of Their League documentary. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville is expected to be at the game.
The Ammies lost 2-0 at home to Darlington on the opening day and then won 1-0 at Chorley on Tuesday despite ending the game with nine men.
The Moor Lane club went full-time over the summer and have signed the likes of former Morecambe and Blackpool attacker Jack Redshaw, ex-Carlisle United defender Danny Livesey and Gambia international Ibou Touray.
“I’m expecting another tough game,” added Gough.
“Salford have strengthened extremely well and clearly want to be out of this league this season.
“They will be organised and have experience throughout their squad.
“We need to take the York game and our second-half performance from Tuesday into this game and put in another good shift.”
Jack Rea is a doubt after missing the Brackley game due to a knock to his knee.
Matthew Barnes-Homer (quad) is also being carefully monitored.
Anthony Dwyer’s three-match suspension, which carried over from last season, has been served and he is available for selection.
Winger Chekaine Steele is training again but still working his way back to full fitness after a hamstring injury.
