AFC Telford winger Chekaine Steele set to step up comeback
Winger Chekaine Steele has thanked everyone at AFC Telford United for giving him a warm welcome as he nears a return from a hamstring strain.
The 20-year-old was snapped up earlier this summer from Worcester City but has not played for the Bucks yet because of the injury.
His last game was for Worcester in April, and he has spent the last couple of months rehabilitating with the help of Telford physio Jake Roe.
Steele is now looking to be involved against Bradford Park Avenue at the New Bucks Head next weekend.
“I spoke to the gaffer and we’ve got a full week of training ahead,” he said.
“I’m looking to do that and hopefully be in the squad for the Bradford Park Avenue game.
“It has been a killer – the last time I played was for Worcester against Stockport (on April 17).
“I have done a lot of rehab on it and you have to do everything the right way, you can’t rush it.
“I have been doing the right work with Jake and now I am feeling more confident.”
Steele was signed by old Bucks boss Rob Smith, and current chief Rob Edwards is keen to give the youngster a chance to impress.
On how he has found the change in management, he said: “It was a bit of a shock because I didn’t expect Rob [Smith] and [assistant] Larry [Chambers] to go.
“They brought me in but with the gaffer now, I have not got a bad word to say about him.
“Since I have been injured and stuff, Rob has always been helping – and he hasn’t even seen me play – so that’s good.
He added: “Even though I have been injured, being around the place, everyone here makes you feel a big part of it.
“At first, I wanted to be less involved on a matchday as I thought If I’m not fit, I can’t contribute – but the lads would not let happen.
“Everyone has been really welcoming and I am just looking forward to getting started now and playing again.”The main aim is to focus on getting through training, and then gradually building up some minutes on the pitch – just show the fans what I can do.”
