Telford boss Rob Edwards praised his team's character after last night's big 2-0 win over Tamworth.

The Bucks ended a five-match winless streak by weathering an early storm from their visitors before slowly growing to the game.

John Marsden scored with a 30-yard wonderstrike on the hour mark before birthday boy Elliot Newby wrapped up the points in the 89th minute on the day he turned 22.

And Edwards was delighted with how his team toughed it out after he mirrored Tamworth's wing-back formation.

"Let's not hide away from it, we've had a bit of tough period results-wise," he said. "I think there was a lack of belief at the beginning, a lack of confidence and that's understandable. "There are going to be a few grumblings, one oe two loose passes, and I think it did affect us early on.

"We had a poor opening period but stayed in the game and limited them to few real chances.

"You know then we've got to produce something, and it was a fantastic goal to get us up and running.

"Then we had to shore it up again because inevitably they're going to come at us.

"We went a little bit more defensive and tried to soak it up and we thought if we did that we could try and get another one on the counter and luckily that came off as well.

"All the credit has to go to the players because it's difficult to play after a run of four or five without win.

"They showed a lot of character, a lot of heart, a lot of fight, and they played for their club.

"Tamworth have got some very good players, so it's a big win.

Edwards returned to the 3-5-2 formation he had used at the start of the season in order to match Tamworth's approach, and he challenged his players to win their individual battles.

"It's something we're quite well versed in," he said. " We've been different recently but we know Tamworth are very clear in what they do, we did our homework on them.

"We matched them and my team talk was to the point, we have to win more one v one battles than the opposition.

"This win was all due to the players' hard work and commitment, they showed real intensity at times as well without the ball, which was pleasing.

"A bit of fight, a bit of steel, which is needed at football at any level and then a couple of great finishes as well which is needed to top it off."

Ryan Wilson didn't feature on the night and he could now be out for a couple of weeks.

"He had concussion from the game at the weekend," explained Edwards. "He felt very ill over the weekend and was groggy still on Monday morning.

"We had to take the necessary precautions because a secondary blow can be very dangerous so that could be a couple of weeks."
