Snow joke as AFC Telford search for a place to train
AFC Telford United boss Rob Edwards is concerned they may not have somewhere suitable to train this week.
The Bucks have had their last two games postponed due to snow.
A small group usually trains on Monday and Friday afternoons at Wolves’ Compton Park complex, with the whole squad training on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Lilleshall Sports Centre.
But because of the heavy snow over the weekend, Edwards insists getting his players together for a session – whether at Compton or Lilleshall – may not be possible.
“We can only control the controllables – you cannot control the weather,” said Edwards.
“The main worry I have is making sure there is somewhere for us to train – that is my main concern.
“Tuesdays and Thursdays are the main sessions, that’s when everyone trains.
“We’re usually down at Lilleshall but with things as they are now, I very much doubt we’ll be able to train there.
“I cannot affect the weather, but I have to try to make sure that we train somewhere.
“If the game (at Blyth Spartans in the FA Trophy) does go ahead this Saturday, you want at least a couple of good sessions going into it.
“The safety of the players is paramount, especially as we have players coming from everywhere.
“We’ll just have to see what happens.”
Saturday’s game against York at the New Bucks Head was postponed despite the efforts of club staff and volunteers to clear snow off the pitch.
It was waterlogging under the frost covers which made the pitch unplayable.
“We all tried our best but even if we got the game on, the pitch would have been ruined completely,” said Edwards.
“You just have to get on with it and look to the next game.
“There is going to be cancellations, they happen, although there didn’t seem to be a whole lot of bad weather last year.”
Meanwhile, Connor Johnson and Jack Rea are both hoping to return to the Bucks fold soon.
Johnson has been struggling with a hamstring injury for three weeks, but missed just one game, while Rea has been nursing an ankle injury since August.
“The postponements are to the benefit of the lads with the injuries as they have not missed some of the games they thought they would,” added Edwards.
“We’ll have to see how they get on.”
