AFC Telford snap up goalkeeper Ryan Schofield on loan from Huddersfield Town
AFC Telford United have signed teenage goalkeeper Ryan Schofield on loan from Premier League side Huddersfield Town.
Schofield is well thought of at the Terriers, where he is contracted until 2019, and joins the Bucks until the end of the season – including any possible play-off campaign.
The 18-year-old helped England U20s win the Toulon Tournament in the summer – making a crucial penalty shootout save in the final victory against the Ivory Coast – and went on Huddersfield's pre-season trip to Austria.
Paul Clements, head of goalkeeping at Huddersfield, told the club's website: "Ryan has done very well this season as part of our first team squad, but we believe that this is the next phase of his development.
"This is a new challenge for him as it’ll be the first time he has to move away from his home, an experience that could really benefit him in his career.
"I know their manager Rob (Edwards) and he wants his teams to play out from the back, so that’ll help him get used to doing that for us later in his career.
"You look at all the top English goalkeepers at the minute, like Jordan Pickford, and they’ve all had experiences and loan moves like this, which shows how beneficial they could be.
“It’s important for him now as a young keeper to go out and play proper football, where there’s some expectation on him playing in front of crowds.
“Ryan will still be thought of part of our first team squad, which is why we’ve included the recall clause, so if we need him he can come back.”
Schofield has experience in Telford's division, having had a loan spell at FC United of Manchester towards the end of last season.
The Bucks looked to sign Wolves shot-stopper Jack Ruddy on a temporary basis before shifting their attention towards Schofield.
He will compete with Jas Singh for the No.1 jersey.
Meanwhile, Telford winger Zak Lilly has joined Romulus on a one-month loan.
He recently returned to the Bucks after a spell on loan at Rushall Olympic.
