Amari Morgan-Smith: AFC Telford feels like home
Amari Morgan-Smith feels truly at home at AFC Telford United – because he already lives in the town.
The 28-year-old striker has joined the Bucks on an 18-month deal from York City.
And having lived in Telford for the last five years, he is intent on getting the goals to help Rob Edwards’ side climb away from danger in National League North.
“I was born in Wolverhampton and I’ve been living in Telford for the last five years,” said Morgan-Smith.
“I always thought that I’d sign for Telford.
"I’m home, I’m happy, with my family around me. I feel good.
“I’ll give it my all, everything I have, when I pull the shirt on – fans will find that out about me.
“Hopefully I’ll be here for a long time and can help the club move back in the right direction.”
Morgan-Smith made 28 appearances for York this season and scored four goals.
The target man has also played for the likes of Luton Town, Macclesfield Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Oldham Athletic and Cheltenham Town.
He is surprised Telford are second from bottom.
“I played against Telford for York on the first day of the season. Of course, Telford won 1-0 and I was really impressed with the team on the day – they played really well,” said Morgan-Smith.
“I’ve been speaking to the lads about that game.
“I don’t really know how we’re in this position now but hopefully, with my experience, I can help us to get back on track.
“I played against Telford a few years ago, at the New Bucks Head, for Luton as well.
“The place was rocking, with a lot of fans, and we want to look to get it back like that.”
Morgan-Smith insists he is in prime condition, although the Bucks’ training schedule – optional sessions on Monday and Friday afternoons, and compulsory Tuesday and Thursday nights – has taken some adjusting to after being used to a full-time set-up at York.
He is keeping his fingers crossed Saturday’s scheduled home game with North Ferriby United will go ahead, following a spate of postponements for Telford recently.
“I feel fit – no injuries, no niggles – touch wood,” added Morgan-Smith.
“I’m really hoping the game will be on.”
