Hornby has been a Bucks volunteer for several years – running the club shop at the ground among various other duties – and is now attending board meetings.

She is looking into bringing in younger fans to boost gates for home games, which tend to be around the 1,100 mark.

"Over the years I have become involved in more volunteer roles and I will continue to run the club shop, pick litter up after the games and help out with internationals and Telford Junior League finals," said Hornby.

"To start with I am looking into ideas to introduce new connections with young football fans and ultimately to increase the gate.

"I’m open to suggestions from others on how to do this but overall, I’m really excited about the opportunity and looking forward to the challenge.

"I know that there are many other projects which the board are keen to involve me in."

Hornby will be at board meetings along with interim chairman Andy Pryce, managing director Ian Dosser and fan liaison director Luke Fearnall.

On how joining the board came about, Hornby said: "I had a meeting with Ian Dosser and Andy Pryce last year about the club shop and Supporters’ Association, during which they asked if I had considered joining the club board.

"I have wanted to be more involved but had not imagined myself as a member of the club board.

"They told me that they want more people around the table, there are a lot of jobs that need doing."

The club hierarchy are delighted to have Hornby around, to have her say on pressing matters at the club.

Announcing her as a board member, Telford said in a club statement: "We are pleased that Carolyn Hornby is working with the club board on a number of projects and with immediate effect will attend our club board meetings as an Associate Member.

"Carolyn has been a supporter of AFC Telford for nine years and grown year on year the amount of volunteering she does for the football club, she has lots of good ideas and even more important rolls up her sleeves and delivers them.

"We look forward to working with Carolyn going forward on a number of different projects."
