Elliot Newby keen to chip in with more goals for AFC Telford
Elliot Newby is happy to shoulder the goalscoring burden during this tough period for AFC Telford United.
The 22-year-old winger scored a penalty in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Chorley.
He also netted the winner, after coming on as a substitute, in last Thursday’s 3-2 triumph against Spennymoor Town and is now on seven goals for the season.
“I was confident to take the penalty. After getting a goal on Thursday, I was confident to get another,” said Newby, with the Bucks currently third bottom in National League North.
“That’s what we need, we need goals at the moment. If I can take responsibility to do that, that’s brilliant.
“We need to get goals from somewhere and I’ve always wanted to get more goals. Hopefully I can get a few more before the end of the season.
“At the start of the season, I was looking for double figures in goals.
“As a wide player, that’s what you aim for – how you can help the team. That’s my target.”
The game at the weekend was a strange one for Newby.
It was the first time he has played against twin brother Alex, who scored the opener for the Magpies.
“It was a bit of an odd game, to be honest,” said Newby, who signed for the Bucks from Barrow last summer.
“The way it’s gone, I thought we did a lot of things right in the game but the two goals were criminal.
“That’s what it comes down to in the end, isn’t it?
“It’s the first time I’ve played him, our parents were watching.
“I’m sure they were proud. He took his goal well and has popped up with a few this year.
“I’m happy for him, in a way. I just wish it didn’t come on Saturday.”
Next up for Telford is a home clash with Leamington on Thursday. The remaining matches after that are against Stockport County, Blyth Spartans, Gainsborough Trinity, Spennymoor and Boston United.
Newby is well aware of how important the clash with the Brakes is.
“Looking ahead to Thursday, it’s a cup final,” he added.
“Results went our way on Saturday, in terms of other teams, so that’s a bonus.
“Thursday is a very winnable game and all the focus is on that.”
