Gavin Cowan: It’s a privilege to play at AFC Telford

The former skipper, appointed earlier this month following the departure of Rob Edwards, says players need to be ready for his ‘intense’ style of management and coaching. Cowan has so far moved to secure the services of defenders Shane Sutton and Ross White and midfielder Henry Cowans for next season.

The ex-defender is busy in non-stop negotiations and talks with potential suitors.

“I know what I want and I know what it takes to be successful,” said the New Bucks head chief.

“I’m a little bit arrogant about this football club. Players should want to play for this football club.

“Some players are quivering over a few pence, but when I was captain, I know what a privilege it was here.

“We want to get the community back in here, the fans will start bouncing and players would then realise they had the chance to come here.

“I’m a little bit tired of the ‘same old Telford’ story recently.”

Cowan, who played for the Bucks between 2008 and 2010, has told would-be signings what the New Bucks Head can be like.

He added: “Yes, I tell them when I played there was 2,000-plus fans there. It was a brilliant place to be around.”

“I’m big into the community and I’m asking the community to come and do their bit.

“I live in the community. The people in the community are very passionate football people.

“I will be around in the stadium after games for people to come and see me.

“They have become disullionsed because of the results. Being behind the scenes last season the club were in the exceptional hands of Rob Edwards, who I still speak with regularly, and he’s a class act.

“I like the continuity, there’s a lot of ground work been done and I want to build on that.”

“It’s a fresh appearance and a fresh mentality. We’re going to do well. I urge the fans to support us.”

Cowan added: “Players should be desperate to play for this football. If you play in the National League North one of the few sides to play for is AFC Telford United.

“If players meet me they’ll see what I’m all about. I’m very intense and passionate. I won’t give them a breather.”
