AFC Telford boss Gavin Cowan happy with recruitment so far

Boss Gavin Cowan has expressed his delight with all the signings AFC Telford United have made so far this summer.

The Bucks have 16 players tied down for next season, including James McQuilkin and Andre Brown – both snapped up from National League North rivals Kidderminster Harriers.

Cowan had a good look at the new arrivals, as well as some trialists, as they began their pre-season schedule with a 6-0 victory over Ellesmere Rangers on Saturday.

“I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen. I’m really happy with my recruitment and have had lots of compliments about it,” he said.

“I’m very particular in who I bring in. We don’t want any people upsetting the apple cart.”

New striker Daniel Udoh scored twice in the win at the weekend, and winger Adam Dawson – who joined in the wake of Elliot Newby’s departure for Chorley – got on the scoresheet too.

A goalkeeper and a winger remain on the Telford chief’s radar.

One man who does not seem set to sign for the Bucks is former striker Anthony Dwyer.

The 22-year-old is on the lookout for a club after his contract at Altrincham, who he signed for earlier this summer, was cancelled by mutual consent.

He trained with Telford last week, but Cowan says he has not heard from him again.

The boss added: “Ant called me up because, for whatever reason, things had gone sour with the deal he signed there.

“He came in for one session and I’ve not heard from him since.

“It’s a privilege to play for this football club. I’m not chasing anybody. Players have to go out of their way.

“As we’ve not seen him I assume he’s got a club, but he’s not had the decency to tell me.”

Dwyer joined the Bucks last summer after impressing on trial. He went on to make 23 league appearances – 13 starts, 10 as a substitute – and chipped in with six goals.

His game time under Rob Edwards dwindled as the campaign went on, though, and he signed for Hednesford Town in March.

Meanwhile, Telford’s final pre-season friendly will be at Aberystwyth Town on Friday, July 27.

The game against the Welsh Premier side at Park Avenue will kick off at 8pm.

The friendly has been announced after the Buck’s scheduled friendly at Bangor City on Saturday, July 28, was cancelled due to an issue with the pitch.
