Shane Sutton to remain AFC Telford skipper as part of leadership team
Boss Gavin Cowan has revealed his AFC Telford United 'senior leadership team' for the upcoming season.
Centre-half Shane Sutton – who was skipper under Rob Edwards – will serve as the team captain.
Midfielder Ellis Deeney has been named as vice-captain and Theo Streete, having arrived from Brackley Town earlier this summer, the club captain.
The 'old school' approach was used during Cowan's time as a player with the Bucks, under Rob Smith and Larry Chambers.
"I'm going a little bit old school, to be honest, in terms of the captaincy and how that works," said Cowan.
"One of the successful things we had when I played here a few years ago was that we had a captain, a vice captain and then a club captain.
"They were the senior leadership team if you like.
"As it stands at the moment, if he's selected Shane will be the team captain, Ellis the vice captain and Theo is going to be the club captain.
"Those three are going to manage things for me in different aspects, amongst others.
"We're going a little bit old school on that one as I believe it gives the players responsibility to organise things, instead of having one voice all the time. That's what it's going to be."
Sutton, aged 29, arrived at Telford last summer after several years at Newtown, where he was also skipper.
Deeney, 26, has leadership experience from his time at Aston Villa as a teenager, and then his spell at Worcester City.
Streete, 30, was captain as Solihull Moors won the National League North title in the 2015/16 campaign – Cowan being a player-coach there that season.
A similar set-up was used at Shrewsbury Town under Paul Hurst – Abu Ogogo the matchday skipper and Mat Sadler the club captain.
Cowan added: "Other clubs have done it over the years and it is something, as a player, that was really successful with me.
"When I played here, you had players like Stuart Whitehead and Jamie Vermiglio (in those roles).
"There was a real good set-up, and it;s been successful at other clubs, so I've introduced it again."
